Henry thinks what bothers him most is how easy it seems for Alex to fake it. To make a game out of putting his arm around Henry’s shoulders, calling him babe and saying things like “Here, I know you want the rest of this burrata,” which is true but Henry has no idea how Alex could have guessed that about him.

Well, if it’s a game Alex wants, Henry does so like to win.

“Darling,” says Henry, once they’ve nearly polished off their appetizers, and he actually feels Alex jerk at the word like it’s just electrocuted him.

He looks at Henry, and for once, he doesn’t seem to have anything to say.

“Come here a moment,” says Henry, leaning in and very much enjoying the way Alex’s eyes dart all over his face before Henry’s thumb lands on the corner of Alex’s mouth, brushing away a stray crumb. “There.” And then he returns to his own dish like nothing has happened, because nothing has happened, apart from Alex staring like Henry’s upended their pitcher of ice water on him.

Unluckily for Henry, Alex is more than quick to recover.

“Thanks, sweetheart,” he says, the last word drawn suggestively out, “but you know you can always use your mouth instead, right?”

The first time Henry got on his knees for Alex, it was an accident.

It never would have happened if it weren’t for the strict “partners only” rule that Alex’s company had for its annual holiday party. One of the biggest perks of working in the legal department for a major entertainment company was the huge fancy party they put on each year, and Alex had been planning to bring his best friend, Henry, since practically the day he was hired. The two of them had already been talking about it for months by that point.

So, really, the only option Alex was left with was subterfuge.

a/n: i had the idea of akechi x rental girlfriend live in my head rent free in my head for a few months now! i really love this idea & can't wait to write more rental gf/bf stuff! <3

akechi didn't care about having a girlfriend! he never wanted one, as he believed relationships would only be a waste of time

but he hadn't expected that having a girlfriend could be beneficial when it came to his public image

akechi had tons of female fans, who all hoped to be the one to win the detective prince's heart! but he didn't want any of them

so to turn them down nicely and improve his public image, akechi hired you, a rental girlfriend, to help him with that!

akechi begins to take you out on dates to public places, where he knows people would see him

he always pays for the dates, as well as paying you an extra sum of money to be your only customer!

after all, if people saw you on a date with another guy, that would ruin everything! he didn't need any negative press, so he insisted on being the only man you dated

akechi quickly begins to enjoy his time with you. you never talk about anything in particular, but when he's with you, he can forget about his stressful life and just relax for a couple hours

akechi begins to open up to you and as the two of you develop a friendship, akechi also develops a crush on you!

he never expected this to happen when he first hired you! but now that he's crushing on you, the idea of a relationship doesn't seem that bad to him anymore…

while he always remained rather secretive about his relationship with you to the public – only telling them a little to fuel speculations and have people talk about him – he suddenly becomes much more open about dating you

he happily talks about you on tv, proudly calling you his girlfriend!

while your relationship might have started as a fake one, akechi is determined to turn you into his actual girlfriend!

and once he accomplished his goals and ruined shido's life, he wouldn't mind stepping out of the public eye and settling down with you, to live a quiet life…

"Oh." Daniel nods. His face looks stiff. Max wishes he would smile a real smile. "Your mother has also been playing at matchmaker?"

"Worse," Max says. "My father." It isn't quite the truth, but Max knows Jos would prefer he choose a woman for a partner--one with a title and large dowry, who can give him biological heirs. Letting a man court him publicly will not go over well, but the fact that Daniel is the prince might soften the blow. At least Max can get the fight about his preferences over with now, and by the time Daniel discards him, he will be able to nurse his wounds in peace.

"Thank you," Daniel says, and there, finally--his smile widens, reaches his eyes, and spreads warmth through Max's chest. "I only need to show Mum I'm trying, and then I'm sure she will let me be for a while. After a few months, you can reject me gracefully, and things will go back to the way they were before."

That isn't what Max wants, for things to stay the same, but he nods anyway. It will be worth it, to know what it feels like if Daniel really wanted him, even for a little while.

fic with the most hits: Not a huge surprise to me that it's Nothing But You On My Mind 😅almost since I posted that fic, it ran away with all the stats. I recently remembered that I posted that fic in March 2020, which is wild.

fic with the second most kudos: thinking about the t-shirt you sleep in was the first longer fic I wrote, and at the time I thought the longest fic I would ever write (lol)

“Okay, you two, here’s the thing,” says Nora, all business the moment she’s sat them both down. Somehow, Henry has wound up on the same side as Alex, in a little corner booth that’s far too cozy for his liking. Alex, on his part, hadn't seemed surprised to see Henry there, but he doesn’t look particularly happy about it either, so Henry supposes they have that in common at least.

Nora clears her throat and laces her hands together like the bearer of some very bad news. “Calvin seems to be under the impression that this is a double date.” She pauses, then adds, as if this all isn’t horrifying enough: “And I didn’t correct him. So. Given that he is the first guy in a while—or girl, for that matter—to even make it past date two, I’m going to need you to play ball with me here.”

“I—” starts Henry. He’d rather eat glass than be fake-dating Alex. He’d rather let Pez choose all his outfits for a whole entire month. He’d rather—

“Sure,” says Alex at the same time. "Why not?"
